London
Transport Museum - Acton Town Depot
London Transport Museum in Covent Garden is the proud
home of one of the most comprehensive and important
records of urban transport anywhere in the world. Yet
the galleries in Covent Garden are able to display only
a fraction of the Museum's remarkable collections.
As well as vehicles and railway rolling stock, the Museum's
wider collections boast a huge range of historic and
artistic material including: 16 000 posters by some
of the world's most famous artists from 1908 to the
present; 100 000 black and white photographs documenting
London's social history; nearly one million feet of
original archive film; engineering drawings; uniforms;
clocks; signs; tickets and other ephemera. Behind the
scenes lies an important library containing the story
of London's public transport.
Now, for the first time in the museum’s history,
the 370 000 items not currently on display are together
under one roof where they are being properly stored,
catalogued and made available to public view. Just half
an hour on the Piccadilly line from the Museum in Covent
Garden, the Museum Depot at Acton Town provides a secure,
environmentally controlled store in which curators can
work to preserve our heritage for future generations.
The Depot's main purpose is to act as a working museum
store. However, the building is open to the public on
a limited basis through regular guided tours and open
days.
Awarded to Executive Secure Services in April 2002,
our contract is to provided suitably trained, motivated
vetted security officers to assist the museum staff
managing building management systems, fire warning systems,
security systems, whilst carrying out the routine tasks
of patrol monitoring, pedestrian access control, vehicle
